On a daily basis, your medical team at The Pet Health Center prescribe pills, liquids, drops, shampoos and tablets to cure, control and prevent diseases. We have binders full of prescribing information, access to dosing online, and we carefully follow guidelines to use medications safely and wisely.

Correct prescribing by the veterinarian is critical to medication success, but the other half, administering medications as prescribed, is equally important. Pet owners often misunderstand directions or adjust medication dosing without consulting their pet’s veterinary healthcare team. This can be a costly mistake in your pet's recovery. Before changing any doses you should always consult your veterinarian first.

Your medical team has carefully selected medications that we believe are effective and safe to use, many of them are FDA approved. Routine continuing education seminars with manufactures allows us to stay current on new medications and treatments. For your convenience we have a fully stocked in-house pharmacy for dispensing. If you need to place an order give us a call at 215-739-6401.

Medication Pointers

1. Stay away from Dr. Google. He often hurts more than he helps.

Read the label. Read it again and if you have questions, don't hesitate to give us a call we are here to help.

2 .Give the medication as prescribed on the label. Don’t adjust the amount, frequency, or duration of administration without talking to your veterinarian.

3. If you are having trouble administering medications, stop by your veterinarian’s office for a lesson in administration.

4. If the medication schedule does not fit with your schedule, ask your veterinarian if there is an alternative drug with a different schedule.

5. If your pet won’t take a pill, ask if the medication comes in a liquid or can be formulated into a liquid to ease administration. Don't be above bribery, there is nothing wrong with hiding medication in your pet's favorite treat or by pairing dosing with their favorite activity.

6. If you think your pet is having a bad reaction to the medication, stop the medication and call your veterinarian immediately. For after hours trips to the animal ER, be sure to take all the medications with you and show them to the ER staff.
