FAQs

Do pets need flea and tick prevention year-round in Philadelphia?
Yes.
While these pests are more active in the heat, many species of ticks are active as soon as the temperature rises above freezing. Furthermore, fleas love the climate-controlled warmth of your home during the winter. Year-round protection is the only way to ensure there are no gaps in your pet’s safety.
Why does my pet need prevention if they stay mostly indoors?
While indoor pets are at a lower risk, they aren’t invincible. Fleas can hitch a ride into your home on your clothing, or even through window screens. Additionally, other pets or “uninvited guests” like mice can carry fleas inside. Once a single flea enters your home, it can lay up to 50 eggs a day, quickly leading to a full-blown infestation in your carpets and furniture.
What kind of diseases can fleas and ticks carry?
It’s not just about the itch! Ticks are notorious for transmitting serious conditions like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Anaplasmosis. Fleas can cause severe allergic dermatitis, tapeworms, and even anemia in smaller pets. Prevention is much safer (and significantly cheaper) than treating these complex illnesses.
Can’t I just use over-the-counter products from the grocery store?
Not all preventatives are created equal. Many over-the-counter options are less effective than veterinary-grade products, and some can even be toxic if applied incorrectly, especially to cats. We recommend prescription-strength preventatives because they are rigorously tested for safety and efficacy, and we can tailor the dosage specifically to your pet’s weight and lifestyle.
