Parasite Control and Heartworm Testing

The idea of your pet being infested with parasites is a disturbing thought, but it’s also a medical issue that can have serious consequences if not properly dealt with or prevented. Parasites pose a variety of health issues for our pets, who can be very susceptible to certain parasites depending on age, region, and other factors.

At Philly Pet Clinic, we emphasize the importance of preventing parasites. Through preventative measures, you can successfully protect your pet. Pets that are not protected often develop parasites, leading to serious problems for them and their owners.

The cost of prevention is minimal compared to the cost of treatment, which can be expensive and stressful on your pet. Parasites like heartworm can even be fatal, so preventing parasites is of the utmost importance.

FAQs

Why is heartworm testing important if my pet is on prevention?
Even pets on monthly prevention should be tested once a year. Heartworm preventatives are highly effective, but no medication is 100% fail-proof. Missed doses, delayed administration, vomiting after dosing, or resistance can allow infection to occur. Annual testing ensures early detection, which is critical because heartworm disease can be life-threatening and much more complicated (and costly) to treat than it is to prevent.
How do pets get heartworms?
Heartworms are spread through mosquito bites. When an infected mosquito bites your pet, it can transmit microscopic heartworm larvae into the bloodstream. Over time, these larvae mature into adult worms that live in the heart and lungs. Because mosquitoes are common in many areas — even indoors — both indoor and outdoor pets are at risk.
What parasites does monthly prevention protect against?
Many monthly preventatives protect against more than just heartworms. Depending on the product, they may also protect against intestinal parasites like roundworms and hookworms, as well as fleas, ticks, and mites. These parasites can cause serious health issues and some can even be transmitted to people. We’re happy to recommend the safest and most effective option based on your pet’s lifestyle and risk factors.
What happens if my pet tests positive for heartworms?
If a pet tests positive, we’ll guide you through the next steps, which typically include confirmatory testing and a carefully monitored treatment plan. While treatment is available, it can be lengthy and requires activity restriction to reduce complications. That’s why prevention and annual testing are so important — they protect your pet from a preventable and potentially life-threatening disease.
